Modelling the impact of sediment management on the trophic state of a tropical reservoir with high water storage variations Anais da ABC (AABC)
LIRA,CAMILA C.S; MEDEIROS,PEDRO H.A.; NETO,IRAN E. LIMA.
Abstract Eutrophication of lakes has affected society in many regions, particularly in water scarce environments where: i) low runoff reduces the self-purification potential of water bodies; ii) water supply relies on surface reservoirs, which are susceptible to nutrient enrichment. This work presents an assessment of the impact of the silted sediment management on the trophic status of a tropical surface reservoir with intense temporal variability of water storage. A complete mixing model describing the total phosphorus budget in the water and sediments was used, based on semi-empirical formulations. The sediment reuse as soil fertilizer has been proposed to increase productivity in small scale agriculture, which should also enhance the water quality by...

Simple relationships to predict attributes of fish assemblages in patches of submerged macrophytes Neotropical Ichthyology
Pelicice,Fernando Mayer; Thomaz,Sidinei Magela; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio.
Submerged macrophytes play an important role in structuring habitats and, therefore, in determining patterns of aquatic biodiversity. Because these plants are widespread in shallow areas of many Neotropical reservoirs, the present work investigated if variables related to habitat structure, measured in patches of submerged macrophytes (Egeria densa and E. najas), can be used to predict fish assemblage attributes (fish density and species richness). Based on patch characteristics at fine spatial extents (macrophyte patches within reservoir arms), we considered plant biomass, volume and proportional volume (i.e. percentage of macrophyte volume in the water column) as potential predictors. Fish and macrophytes were sampled with a 1-m² throw trap in littoral...

Spatial variations in the zooplankton community from the Corumbá Reservoir, Goiás State, in distinct hydrological periods - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v31i3.4132 Biological Sciences
Takahashi, Erica Mayumi; UEM; Lansac-Tôha, Fábio Amodêo; UEM; Dias, Juliana Déo; UEM; Bonecker, Claudia Costa; UEM; Velho, Luiz Felipe Machado; UEM.
This study evaluated the spatial variations in species richness and abundance of zooplankton over a hydrological cycle, and also verified the influence of physical and chemical water variables and chlorophyll-α concentrations on the abundance of these organisms. The tested hypothesis was that the zooplankton community presents higher species richness in lotic environments and higher abundance in lentic ones. One hundred forty species were identified, distributed among rotifers (88), testate amoebae (35), cladocerans (13) and copepods (4). Higher values of species richness and abundance were observed during the dry period. During both hydrological periods, the copepods presented high abundance values, due to the contribution of young stages,...

Structure and dynamics of phytoplankton community in the Botafogo reservoir-Pernambuco-Brazil BABT
Lira,Giulliari Alan da Silva Tavares de; Bittencourt-Oliveira,Maria do Carmo; Moura,Ariadne do Nascimento.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the structure and dynamics of the phytoplankton in the Botafogo reservoir-PE-Brazil. Phytoplankton assemblages were identified from current literature and density was estimated using an inverted microscope. Concurrently to the sampling of biotic variables, measurements of abiotic parameters, such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH, were determined using field probes and transparency was determined with a Secchi disk. Total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations were determined in laboratory. A total of 24 taxa were identified. Chlorophyta presented the greatest number of species. Species diversity in the reservoir was low throughout the study period. Principal component analysis revealed that...
